Dress and Grooming - General Appearance

Boys

Summer

  • White short sleeve shirt with School Badge on pocket
  • grey shorts for all Grade 1-6 learners. Only Grade 7's may wear long greys in summer
  • knee length grey socks with school colour trim
  • black lace-up shoes.

Winter

  • Maroon Blazer with School Badge (optional)
  • White long sleeve or short sleeve shirt (as above)
  • Grey longs; school fleecy
  • grey socks OR new maroon parachute full track suit (available at the school) to be worn with Black school shoes, not 'takkles'. Houghton School dry macs.
Tracksuits may only be warn in winter as a whole not as indicidual items.

Girls

Summer

  • Maroon and white checked dress (knee length dress not shorter.)
  • white socks
  • black school shoes
  • full white panties. No Iycra shorts are to be worn under dresses Grey gym tunic
  • white school shirt
  • school fleecy
  • knee length grey socks with school colour trim

Winter

  • or dark thick grey tights
  • black shoes
  • grey pants/skirt/gym
  • OR new maroon parachute full track suit (available at the school) to be worn with black school shoes, not 'takkies'. (School blazer is optional for both girls and boys). Houghton School dry macs. Tracksuits only be worn in winter. Tracksuits must be worn as a whole not as individual items. Dry mac with school badge my be worn.

Physical Education

ALL PUPILS REQUIRE:
  • White Houghton golf shirt
  • Maroon shorts
  • White 'takkies'
  • White socks.
No other clothing is acceptable! In winter a tracksuit may be worn with white takkies.

Swimming

Boys
  • Black costume
  • swimming cap (compulsory - available from the school)
Girls
  • Plain black costume
  • swimming cap (compulsory - available from the school).

Every child must have a waterproof swimming bag, (clearly marked with the child's name) to hold a costume and towel. (A maroon kit bag is available from the school office). Swimming is a compulsory activity, and no child will be excused unless a note is brought from the parent, or a medical certificate is produced

General: No tracksuit may be worn with a grey school jersey. No tracksuit top may be worn as a jersey. The tracksuit must be worn as a whole tracksuit with a white school shirt under it. No T-Shirts must be worn under school shirts. Only a white vest will be permitted. In winter the maroon school scarf, gloves and beanie may be worn. These are available from the office. No other scarf etc. will be permitted. Houghton School dry macs may be worn in summer and winter. All articles of clothing must be clearly marked with the child's name.


Hair

It is the pupil's responsibility to ensure that his/her hairstyle conforms at all times to the following specifications:
Girls
  • Hair should be neat and tidy and completely under control with no fashioned hairstyles.
  • Perming is NOT allowed in any length of hair.
  • No colouring, including rinses, tints and highlighted or peroxide is permissible.
  • Short hairstyles off the collar need an Alice-band or to be tied or clipped well back off the face. Alternatively, it must be neatly styled in a very short manner.
  • Long hair must be tied back well away from the face and against the head.
  • Ribbons and hair-clips, in the correct school colours, i.e. black, maroon and grey are permissible.
  • Fringes over the eyebrows and "side burns' must be clipped back off the face and not "hooked" behind the ears.
  • No thick braids or untidy braiding will be allowed. All long braids must be tidy, tied or clipped back.
Hair must be kept clean and tidy at all times. Outlandish or irregular hairstyles, detrimental to the image of the school, will not be permitted. Two days grace will be given for hair to be cut after such an instruction has been given.
Boys
  • Parting is optional.
  • Hair may not touch any part of the ears.
  • Hair at the back of the head may not hang onto the collar, nor curl around the neck or ears.
  • The style must be such that it tapers smoothly to the neck.
  • Hair must be kept well away from the face and fringes may not hang over the eyebrows if pulled forward.
  • No steps or outlandish hairstyles of any kind are allowed. This includes dying, tinting or peroxiding of hair.
  • Long fringes that are gelled back are NOT acceptable.
  • The headmaster has the right to decide whether a hairstyle is acceptable or not.
